For horizontal boom tower cranes, the amplitude change refers to the round-trip operation of the load trolley on the tower crane's heavy boom. Through the operation of the trolley, the amplitude range covered by the hook can be adjusted. The trolley is driven by a luffing mechanism at the root of the arm.

For boom tower cranes, luffing refers to the lifting movement of the tower crane's boom itself to adjust the range covered by the hook. The boom is driven by a hoist on the balance arm.
